Specsavers rewards local rugby team with an opportunity to learn from the best
The Hornby Under 13’s rugby team has been announced as the winners of the Specsavers Ultimate Investec Super Rugby Referee Training Session, just in time for their trip to Queenstown to compete in the New Zealand Junior Rugby Festival.
The team was selected out of 33 others from around New Zealand for having the most compelling entry reason to win and best use of the prize. The team are taking away a training session with Investec Super Rugby Referee, Jamie Nutbrown, free eye examinations for each team member, glasses for those who require them, Investec Super Rugby Referee jerseys, and $1,000 cash all thanks to Specsavers.
The hard working team of 19 players is the first junior team at the Hornby club to qualify for Section One of the tournament in eight years, and will be participating in the Junior Rugby Festival at the end of the month.
Shannon Robinson, Team Manager says, “We are thrilled to have won the Ultimate Investec Super Rugby Referee Training Session. The news couldn’t have come at a better time, with our trip to the Junior Rugby Festival on the horizon. The invaluable skills the team will learn from a professional referee like Jamie Nutbrown will help build the confidence of our players as we head to the tournament. Thanks Specsavers for the opportunity.”
The Hornby Under 13’s team have been fundraising all year to fund their trip to Queenstown, and the $1,000 cash prize will play a huge part in helping them achieve their goal.
“We’ve been organising initiatives as a team to fundraise for the trip, including sausage sizzles, raffles and quiz nights. The $1,000 prize could not have come at a better time, it’s just what we needed and we’re incredibly grateful,” adds Shannon.
Rod Hill, NZR High Performance Referee Manager, says “This is a great opportunity for the highly trained Investec Super Rugby Referees to pass on their wisdom and knowledge to local rugby players, coaches and referees. The Hornby Under 13’s will gain a lot of insight as they train for the Junior Rugby Festival. We wish the team the best of luck.”
Specsavers and New Zealand Rugby’s three-year partnership not only has the eye health of the Investec Super Rugby referees covered, but also all Kiwis, which is why the prize includes a comprehensive eye examination for each team member, plus prescription glasses for those that need them.
