Arty Eyes: Dick Frizzell and Specsavers launch specs with soul
New Zealand artist releases limited edition frames to pay for life-altering surgery equipment in the Pacific.
Iconic New Zealand artist, Dick Frizzell has joined forces with Specsavers to raise money for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ through a limited edition Frizzell frame. Exclusive to Specsavers and available in stores nationwide from today, each unisex frame sold will see $25 donated to The Foundation’s Pacific Outreach team and will enable someone blinded by cataracts to see.
Frizzell is one of New Zealand's most well-known artists and has created some of this country's most recognised artworks. His ‘Woodgrain’ print, which is featured on the limited edition frame, was designed 27 years ago and has been used in multiple mediums including home furnishings and on a ceramic jug where it first appeared. Frizzell says the print has never been used on anything as complex as glasses.
“It’s been really interesting to see this artwork translate onto glasses, and I am so pleased that $25 from each frame will be donated to The Foundation’s Pacific Outreach team”, says Dick.
The Fred Hollows Foundation Founder and Patron, Gabi Hollows, says the money will go towards cataract kits that include the vital components needed for cataract surgery.
“Without these kits, the surgery cannot be completed. Contained within the kits is the intraocular lens, consumables such as bandages and anaesthetic, and pre and post-operative medications.
“We are absolutely thrilled that New Zealand’s most prolific artist has donated his time and artwork to produce this limited edition frame that not only looks good, but also supports a good cause,” says Gabi.
Specsavers NZ Retail Director, Brendan Thompson, says Specsavers has been a proud partner of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ since 2013 and its stores have since donated more than $100,000 through the Specsavers Community Program which sees a portion of glasses sales being given to the charity.
“We’re all so excited to not only see these striking frames being sold in our stores, but also to know that with each pair sold, we can help someone else in the Pacific see again,” adds Brendan.
The Frizzell frame comes with a limited edition Frizzell cloth and box. Available for a limited time from 3 November and starting from $169 for two pairs. To find out more, visit: hollows.org.nz.
