The Artist: Moko Smith

Moko Smith is an artist and cultural practitioner working with the Uhi, the traditional hand-tapping tattoo tools of Aotearoa New Zealand. Sharing his name with the art form itself, Moko is dedicated to the revival of these tools within his people and the wider Pacific.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ & Specsavers

The frames feature Taratara notching on the temples and represents a genealogy pattern to honour the shared descent from ancient navigators, a descent that is a cornerstone of identity that bind land and people through time and across the space of Tangaroa’s prodigious Marae.

The inside of the frames feature the Karu o te Whenua pattern, acknowledging the many communities holding fast to their cultural ways while also acknowledging the role Specsavers have played in helping uplift eye health within these communities.
