Hearing aid & audiology funding options

Most New Zealanders will qualify for either the government’s subsidy or another funding assistance option. At Specsavers Audiology, we have fully qualified audiologists in every store who are ready to help you apply for the funding which best suits your circumstances.

The Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has two types of funding for hearing aids, the Hearing Aid Subsidy Scheme and the Hearing Aid Funding Scheme. Chat to your audiology professional about whether one of these schemes could suit your circumstances.

Hearing Aid Subsidy Scheme

All New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over are eligible for the Ministry of Health subsidy. The subsidy is up to $1,022.22 towards a pair of hearing aids, or up to $511.11 towards a single hearing aid, and is available every six years. Applying for the Hearing Aid Subsidy Scheme is easy.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Book a free 15-minute hearing check with Specsavers Audiology.

Book an appointment

2. Discuss your results.

If you can be helped by hearing aids, our audiology professional will discuss your results with you and explain the range available at Specsavers.

3. Confirm your eligibility.

Our audiology professional will work with you and the Ministry of Health to confirm you are eligible.

4. Trial your new hearing aids.

Once your hearing aids are fitted our audiology professional will ensure they are adjusted to suit your needs. You have time to trial your new hearing aids and your audiologist will help you get the best from them.

Hearing Aid Funding Scheme

The Ministry of Health also fully fund hearing aids for New Zealanders who meet specific criteria. Your audiology professional will discuss these criteria with you and determine if you could be eligible for fully funded hearing aids. If this is the case, a fitting fee of $475 will apply.

ACC funding

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides funding for hearing aids and hearing loss treatment to eligible New Zealanders. The ACC offers different levels of funding depending on the cause and extent of your hearing loss. To qualify for this funding, your hearing loss must be a result of an accident, medical treatment or exposure to noise in a work environment. Your Specsavers audiology professional will guide you through each step of this process.

Once your claim form is lodged, the ACC will contact you to complete a claimant questionnaire either over the phone or via post. At Specsavers Audiology, we can help you complete these forms correctly. The completed form must be returned to the ACC within 14 days.

4. Have a hearing assessment.

The ACC will require you to undergo a full hearing assessment which we will complete at Specsavers Audiology.

5. Visit an ENT.

After your hearing assessment, the ACC will arrange for you to discuss your results with an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. The ACC will forward your hearing assessment results to the ENT before your appointment.
