Why are regular eye tests so important?

We believe every Kiwi has the right to healthy sight and should be able to access high quality eye care.

90% of sight loss is avoidable or treatable and yet millions of Kiwis still don’t have regular eye tests!

You don’t need specific symptoms or poor vision to have an eye test. Your eyesight may be fine, however, regular eye tests are important to make sure your eyes are healthy too. It’s recommended you have an eye test every couple of years, or annually if you’re over the age of sixty-five.

Our cutting-edge technology can help us detect potential eye conditions early, which makes them easier to manage. We also keep your records on file so we monitor changes in your eye health over time.

Eye test FAQs

It depends on the patient, but an eye test can take as little as 20 minutes or as long as an hour or more depending on the individual requirements of the patient.

A healthy person with no apparent eye health or vision problems should be quite straightforward. But if you require glasses, then ensure you allow enough time after your consultation to choose your frames and lenses and for the dispenser to take your measurements and place your order. If you are interested in trying contact lenses, you will need a to allow time for a fitting with one of our trained team members to ensure you're matched with the right contact lenses for your needs.

For patients that are experiencing problems with their eyes or vision, or have a pre-existing eye condition or health condition that could affect their eyes, such as diabetes, may take much longer. In these instances, additional clinical assessments may be needed to help the optometrist accurately assess the patient’s eye health and determine the best course of action for them, which may include a referral to an ophthalmologist for specialist review or treatment.

The optometrist will discuss the results with you at the end of the examination and explain if any further tests are required. They will also tell you if there is a change in your prescription, if you need new spectacles or lenses or if they have found any problems and indicate when you should return for your next examination.

Yes. The date of the last test is important for clinical reasons. For example, if a 70 year old patient last had an examination 6 months previously and their prescription had changed significantly, this might indicate that cataracts are developing fairly rapidly. If the same change was observed over a 3 year period in a myopic 22 year old patient, this would be less cause for concern, because it would probably be due to an increase in simple myopia.

Please call your nominated store and request your prescription details from a store team member.
